Your pool filter is the heart of your system. It keeps water clear, safe, and enjoyable all season long. At Tropical Wave Pool Service, we want homeowners to feel confident choosing the right filter. The three most common types are DE (Diatomaceous Earth), Sand, and Cartridge filters. Each has its strengths, but one stands out as the best option for most homeowners: the cartridge filter.

Detailed filtration spectrum chart showing particle sizes from ions to macro particles, measured in microns, nanometers, and inches. Includes examples like protein, bacteria, pollen, beach sand, and shows where DE, cartridge, and sand filters capture particles.
Cartridge Filters can collect debris (Particles Specifically) down to 8 microns in size

While DE-Filters can catch down to 1 micron particles, its not that significant in terms of weekly maintenance that every pool requires. Depending on your pool, its environment and usage, filter cleanings need to occur at least 2-3 times per year, regardless of filter type. Because of this, we recommend a cartridge filter because they are homeowner friendly and simple to maintain without the extra DE-chemicals. Sure, sand filters are good too but in our experience, they always leave extra particles in the pool and do not filter as efficient as a cartridge. Sand can only catch down 35 microns, leaving SIGNIFICANT room for common bacterias, dust, pollen and other contaminants to flow freely in the pool. The only way we can remove those contaminates (dead or alive), without a cartridge filter, is by spending extra money on chemicals, like clarifiers, to bind fine particles together to get get caught by the sand filter. Even then, a sand filter may or may not catch onto those particles depending on how effective the binding is. We can also resort to flocculants. This is not a preferred regular maintenance protocol because it requires a vacuum-to-waste, exponentially more labor, time and if it isn't done slow and steady, the particles that were forced to fall to the bottom of the pool can break up and float into the pool again.

Winner, Winner!
Winner, Winner!

So! In the spirit of Simplicity and cleanliness, we will choose the cartridge filter all day, everyday for standard residential pools.
